Halloween
What do you think about when you hear Halloween? Jack-O-Lanterns? Witches, Goblins and Ghosts? Trick-or-Treating? Did you know that Halloween was actually an Irish holiday to celebrate the fall harvest? It came to American with the Irish during the Great Potato Famine of 1840’s and was celebrated on the eve of All Saints Day—known as All Hallow’s Eve. Back then they told spooky stories and lit bonfires to scare away the spirits; around 1900 costumes and parties started. It wasn’t until the 1950’s (only a little more than 50 years ago) that trick-or-treating became a tradition of the holiday. Now days, who can think of Halloween without thinking about trick-or-treating?
