Sports (boys)
This is just a list of some of the newer picture books about sports, primarily with boys as the main character. We will do girls in February of next year. The list of sports stories, especially once you get into chapter books, is huge! Sports stories are a great way to get non-reading boys into reading. In addition, sport stories, while telling about the sport itself, often touch on the disciplines of hard work, sportsmanship, team work, concentration, and so much more. And participating in sports not only builds a strong body, but new research has proven that active exercise also builds new brain cells. Researchers have found that we are not restricted to the number of brain cells we are born with – we can actually build new ones!
So get off the couch and find a sport for you; there are many, many to choose from… basketball, baseball, football, hockey, soccer, race car driver, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, ice dancing, figure skating, bowling, golf, rugby, weight lifting, martial arts, downhill skiing, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, wrestling, and lacrosse—just to name a few.
